The Elephant in the Sacristy, Revisited MARY EBERSTADT 16 MIN READ September 17, 2018 at 4:33 AM Sixteen years ago, at the height of the 2002 clergy sex scandals in the Catholic church and on the eve of a meeting of bishops in Dallas, The Weekly Standard published an essay of mine called “The Elephant in the Sacristy.” It included an in-depth look at some of the most notorious clergy abuse cases of the time. Back then, like today, the plain facts of the scandals were submerged in what we now call whataboutism. According to these evasive maneuvers, the wrongdoing was supposedly explained by reference to clericalism, celibacy, sexual immaturity, and other attributes invoked to avoid the obvious. I examined and dismissed those analyses, offered up an alternative, and made several recommendations for cleaning up the Catholic church of the future. The scandals, I wrote, were: a cluster of facts …

There Are Holy Priests, Too By KATHRYN JEAN LOPEZ September 17, 2018 6:30 AM I’ve been thinking a lot about priests lately. In truth, I often do, as some of my best friends happen to wear Roman collars. I see them on their low days, and I see them in moments of true total self-surrender. Of course, you know why I’d be thinking about them even more lately. For priests who seek holiness in loving service to God’s people — striving to see God in every person they encounter — these are grueling times. And a few conversations I’ve had lately have reminded me that the good and holy among them, while still human beings, can have a lot of wisdom to offer — if they are true pray-ers. I know some of them, thanks be to God. And they help me see more clearly. One of the priests I’ve …

Ecuador, the bishop’s choice: I’ll leave everything and live a monastic life LUCIANO ZANARDINI ROME Pubblicato il 17/09/2018 The humility of understanding the right moment to step aside or rather to put oneself at the service of the Church, in a different way. On Friday 14 September, Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Monsignor Lorenzo Voltolini, Archbishop of Portoviejo in Ecuador. He is not resigning for health reasons or for an inner crisis, he simply intends to concentrate on prayer. “I feel a little tired, and I think that many have noticed it, especially after the 2016 earthquake that upset the rhythm of my life and that of the entire archdiocese”, the prelate wrote in a letter to his friends. “I think it is wise to leave others younger and capable of administering a local Church in a positive crisis of growth. At the age of 70, therefore, he will …

N.J. hotline to report priest sex abuse overwhelmed by number of callers Updated Sep 14; Posted Sep 14 By Ted Sherman A New Jersey hotline set up to report abuse by priests has had no shortage of callers who have stories of alleged abuse to tell, officials say. A week after the state Attorney General’s office launched a special task force to investigate allegations of sexual abuse within the Catholic dioceses of New Jersey, a dedicated call-in center to allow victims to speak with investigators has been all but overwhelmed. “The hotline has been receiving a high volume of calls — such that additional staff was assigned to receive calls — and some of the calls are reporting multiple victims of abuse,” acknowledged Peter Aseltine, a spokesman for the Division of Criminal Justice. https://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2018/09/a_lot_of_people_have_something_to_say_about_sex_ab.html

Leaked German abuse report shows manipulation from both bishops and scientists Sep 14, 2018 – 1:46 pm EST MAIKE HICKSON LifeSiteNews has obtained the 8-page summary of the German “MHG Study” on clerical sex abuse of minors that was leaked on September 12. The summary makes it clear that the German bishops have been gravely negligent with regard to the handling of the abuse cases. At the same time, the German abuse report itself appears to have its own flaws in that it tries to deflect the problem away from the aspect of priestly homosexuality. None other than Professor Christian Pfeiffer – the criminologist who first had this entire research project under his care, but then was excluded due to his refusal to allow his research to be censored by the German bishops before release – went public on September 12 with some critical remarks about the leaked abuse report. …

Remarks of Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. at the Faith and Reason Institute at Gonzaga University: The Love that Moves the Sun September 14, 2018 Last October, the journal First Things carried my comments on the encyclical Veritatis Splendor. In March, it published my thoughts on Fides et Ratio. Each text needs the other. They’re a diptych. And both mark anniversaries this year; 25 and 20 respectively. I went into a lot of detail in each of those First Things pieces, and I won’t repeat it here for two reasons. First, the landscape of the Church in the United States has changed drastically, and painfully, over the last six months. And second, I’m a pastor, not a scholar. My interest in any papal document is very practical: Does it help me help others to know God, live his will, and get to heaven, or not? For a layman – …
