You’re still surprised by pedophile priests? Here’s how to stop them BY MARCOS BRETÓN September 09, 2018 12:00 AM Since he became the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento a decade ago, Jaime Soto has chosen to remove priests accused of pedophilia or misconduct. This is in contrast to shielding them, as other bishops have in now-infamous coverups of child abuse being investigated by law enforcement authorities in several states. Soto learned. The question is, has the rest of the church? https://www.sacbee.com/news/local/news-columns-blogs/marcos-breton/article217999735.html

What Francis Knew MARK HEMINGWAY Sept 8th, 2018 Conservatives pounce, the media fiddles. In 2016, after the film Spotlight—which portrayed a group of Boston Globe reporters who uncover a sex-abuse scandal covered-up by the Catholic Church—won the Academy Award for best picture, a cultural commentator praised the movie on the Vatican website. The Globe reporters, wrote Luca Pellegrini, “made themselves examples of their most pure vocation, that of finding the facts, verifying sources, and making themselves—for the good of the community and of a city—paladins of the need for justice.” Two years later, as a far worse abuse scandal unfolds in the church—a scandal that may involve the pope himself—the Vatican is silent and the paladins of the news media seem eager to ignore the whole thing. https://www.weeklystandard.com/mark-hemingway/what-francis-knew

Retired N.J. priest says his complaints were dismissed by Boston Archdiocese By Brian MacQuarrie GLOBE STAFF SEPTEMBER 08, 2018 A retired Roman Catholic monsignor says that his efforts to report accusations of clergy sexual misconduct to Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley were rebuffed by the prelate’s secretary, the second reported instance of such allegations running into a dead end in the cardinal’s office. Monsignor Kenneth Lasch of Pompton Plains, N.J., told the Globe that the Rev. Robert Kickham, the cardinal’s secretary, “dismissed” his written concerns in January that a current priest in the Diocese of Paterson, N.J., allegedly had seduced an 18-year-old man from Lasch’s parish in the mid-1980s. “The first letter I received back from Father Kickham was dismissive,” said Lasch, who has advocated for victims of clerical sexual abuse for more than 30 years. “I think the secretary should have made an appointment for me with the cardinal.” https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2018/09/08/retired-priest-says-his-complaints-were-dismissed-boston-archdiocese/TvHKhwpVj6yVrC6eUkfZlJ/story.html

New York Catholic dioceses subpoenaed in sex abuse probe Associated Press reporter Michael Catalini contributed to this report from Trenton, New Jersey. ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York and New Jersey launched new investigations into the Roman Catholic Church’s handling of clergy sex abuse allegations Thursday as the number of similar inquiries around the country continues to grow. In New York, the state’s attorney general issued subpoenas to all eight of the state’s Catholic dioceses seeking any and all documents pertaining to allegations, findings from internal church investigations and payments to victims, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation but not authorized to speak publicly. In New Jersey, state Attorney General Gurbir Grewal announced a new task force that will look at how abuse allegations were handled in the seven dioceses in that state. The investigations come three weeks after a grand jury report found rampant sexual …

What Went Wrong? By Paul Mankowski, S.J. FreeRepublic.com [United States] Downloaded March 30, 2004 An Address to the Confraternity of Catholic Clergy – July 15, 2003 What went wrong, and why? Everyone in the room will rightly understand the question to refer to The Crisis, the daily revelation over the past eighteen months of numberless instances of priestly turpitude, episcopal mendacity, and the resultant bewilderment and fury of the laity. My own take on the problem, which I offer for your consideration, is that the Crisis is chiefly surprising in how unsurprising it is. No one who has been fighting the culture wars within the Church over the past twenty years can fail to recognize his own struggles with a hostile bureaucracy and conflicted hierarchy in the struggles of those pleading for relief from sexual abuse — notwithstanding the disparity in the attendant journalistic drama. In fact, I’d contend that …

Nebraska attorney general asks 3 Catholic dioceses for 40 years of records on abuse allegations By Erin Grace / World-Herald columnist Sep 6, 2018 3 Open your files. This is the directive the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office has given to the state’s three Catholic dioceses. It comes in the wake of last month’s scathing grand jury report examining the sexual abuse of children by Catholic clergy in Pennsylvania, where some 300 priests were found to have abused at least 1,000 minors over the past 70 years. Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson is not asking Catholic officials to go back that far in their records. He is asking for the past 40 years. In letters sent over the past several days to Omaha Archbishop George Lucas, Lincoln Bishop James Conley and Grand Island Bishop Joseph Hanefeldt, Peterson is requesting any information on claims of sexual exploitation — including incidents of child …

Father Octavio Munoz, of Casa Jesus, was ordered held on $50,000 bond Wednesday after being charged with one felony count of child pornography, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and Chicago police. It has taken more than a year to finalize the charges against 40-year-old Munoz, who was removed from ministry in August of 2015. At that time he was pastor of St. Pancratius Church in Brighton Park, only serving there for a few months. Before that assignment, for 7 years Munoz was the …

As bishop looked on, abusive ‘Father Ned’ got new assignment A Roman Catholic bishop who apologized to his flock last month for the “misguided and inappropriate decisions of church leaders” is reckoning with his own role — revealed in federal court a decade ago — in the system that protected pedophile priests. Scranton Bishop Joseph Bambera handled three sexual misconduct cases during his three-year tenure as diocesan vicar for clergy. He testified about one of them in a 2007 civil trial over clergy abuse. Under questioning from a plaintiff’s lawyer, Bambera acknowledged the diocese ignored its own policy by failing to report “Father Ned” — a pseudonym used in court — to civil authorities. He testified that Father Ned was removed from ministry only temporarily before getting another parish assignment. Once there, Bambera told the jury, Father Ned was caught “grooming” a boy for sexual assault. The Associated Press has …

Why it’s so hard to hold priests accountable for sex abuse August 27, 2018 6.47am EDT A grand jury report recently found shocking levels of child sex abuse in the Catholic Church. It uncovered, in six dioceses, the sexual abuse of over 1,000 children and named 301 perpetrator priests. It also found that religious officials had turned a blind eye to the abuse. In response, Pope Francis, head of the Roman Catholic Church, wrote a letter addressed to “the People of God,” saying, “With shame and repentance, we acknowledge as an ecclesial community that we were not where we should have been, that we did not act in a timely manner, realizing the magnitude and the gravity of the damage done to so many lives. We showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them.” The fact is the pope has the power to ensure that this does not happen again. As a scholar of the …
