Just Another Priest Blog I am a Roman Catholic Priest of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. This is where I share some things I write. There are so many priest blogs. Tuesday, September 11, 2018 A Letter to Seminarians: Dear Seminarians, It is not an easy time right now to be a priest or one studying to be a priest. Praise God. The Church is being not only humbled but humiliated by the sins of Her own ministers. Praise God. Countless innocent priests are looked at with suspicion if not outright hatred because of the sins of their guilty brothers. Praise God. I praise God in this not to downplay the depravity of my brothers’ crimes or ignore my own frustration, anger, and sadness at every bit of this awful situation. I praise God because the truth always sets us free and the Cross always conquers. The fact is, I …

What Francis Knew MARK HEMINGWAY Sept 8th, 2018 Conservatives pounce, the media fiddles. In 2016, after the film Spotlight—which portrayed a group of Boston Globe reporters who uncover a sex-abuse scandal covered-up by the Catholic Church—won the Academy Award for best picture, a cultural commentator praised the movie on the Vatican website. The Globe reporters, wrote Luca Pellegrini, “made themselves examples of their most pure vocation, that of finding the facts, verifying sources, and making themselves—for the good of the community and of a city—paladins of the need for justice.” Two years later, as a far worse abuse scandal unfolds in the church—a scandal that may involve the pope himself—the Vatican is silent and the paladins of the news media seem eager to ignore the whole thing. https://www.weeklystandard.com/mark-hemingway/what-francis-knew

New York Catholic dioceses subpoenaed in sex abuse probe Associated Press reporter Michael Catalini contributed to this report from Trenton, New Jersey. ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York and New Jersey launched new investigations into the Roman Catholic Church’s handling of clergy sex abuse allegations Thursday as the number of similar inquiries around the country continues to grow. In New York, the state’s attorney general issued subpoenas to all eight of the state’s Catholic dioceses seeking any and all documents pertaining to allegations, findings from internal church investigations and payments to victims, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation but not authorized to speak publicly. In New Jersey, state Attorney General Gurbir Grewal announced a new task force that will look at how abuse allegations were handled in the seven dioceses in that state. What Went Wrong? By Paul Mankowski, S.J. FreeRepublic.com [United States] Downloaded March 30, 2004 An Address to the Confraternity of Catholic Clergy – July 15, 2003 What went wrong, and why? Everyone in the room will rightly understand the question to refer to The Crisis, the daily revelation over the past eighteen months of numberless instances of priestly turpitude, episcopal mendacity, and the resultant bewilderment and fury of the laity. My own take on the problem, which I offer for your consideration, is that the Crisis is chiefly surprising in how unsurprising it is. No one who has been fighting the culture wars within the Church over the past twenty years can fail to recognize his own struggles with a hostile bureaucracy and conflicted hierarchy in the struggles of those pleading for relief from sexual abuse — notwithstanding the disparity in the attendant journalistic drama. In fact, I’d contend that …

Nebraska attorney general asks 3 Catholic dioceses for 40 years of records on abuse allegations By Erin Grace / World-Herald columnist Sep 6, 2018 3 Open your files. This is the directive the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office has given to the state’s three Catholic dioceses. It comes in the wake of last month’s scathing grand jury report examining the sexual abuse of children by Catholic clergy in Pennsylvania, where some 300 priests were found to have abused at least 1,000 minors over the past 70 years. Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson is not asking Catholic officials to go back that far in their records. He is asking for the past 40 years. In letters sent over the past several days to Omaha Archbishop George Lucas, Lincoln Bishop James Conley and Grand Island Bishop Joseph Hanefeldt, Peterson is requesting any information on claims of sexual exploitation — including incidents of child …
