Remarks of Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. at the Faith and Reason Institute at Gonzaga University: The Love that Moves the Sun September 14, 2018 Last October, the journal First Things carried my comments on the encyclical Veritatis Splendor. In March, it published my thoughts on Fides et Ratio. Each text needs the other. They’re a diptych. And both mark anniversaries this year; 25 and 20 respectively. I went into a lot of detail in each of those First Things pieces, and I won’t repeat it here for two reasons. First, the landscape of the Church in the United States has changed drastically, and painfully, over the last six months. And second, I’m a pastor, not a scholar. My interest in any papal document is very practical: Does it help me help others to know God, live his will, and get to heaven, or not? For a layman – …

Cardinal says women should train priests to fight abuse ‘crisis’ Michel VIATTEAU 16 September 2018 Women should play a greater role in the training of priests to fight the child abuse “crisis” that has engulfed the Catholic Church, Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet has said. More must be done within the church to tackle the root causes of the latest wave of global abuse scandals to rock the institution, said Ouellet, the prefect of the Congregation for Bishops. “We would need participation of more women in (training) of priests,” he told reporters on Saturday on the sidelines of a meeting in the Polish city of Poznan. Better care must be taken when choosing bishops, he said, adding that more women should select candidates for priesthood and assess their suitability for the job. https://sg.news.yahoo.com/cardinal-says-women-train-priests-fight-abuse-crisis-050804444.html

D.C. Deacon Calls on Wuerl to Resign September 8, 2018 Joelle Casteix One of my dearest friends is a married deacon in the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. In his position, he attended to Cardinal Wuerl. But after the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report, he decided: No more. After James wrote and delivered the letter attached below, we talked. He told me that telling Cardinal Wuerl was one thing. But the statement meant little if he didn’t let the survivors know how he felt. So he’s letting me publish his letter on my blog. http://theworthyadversary.com/5002-d-c-deacon-calls-wuerl-resign

Here’s how to stop them BY MARCOS BRETÓN September 09, 2018 12:00 AM Since he became the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento a decade ago, Jaime Soto has chosen to remove priests accused of pedophilia or misconduct. This is in contrast to shielding them, as other bishops have in now-infamous coverups of child abuse being investigated by law enforcement authorities in several states. Soto learned. Many others have urged me to stay but to make significant changes in the way our diocese responds to this crisis. As I have prayerfully considered all …

Extraordinary Synod on Clerical Life Proposed to Address Abuse Crisis But some Church analysts suggest there are more effective ways to facilitate immediate action. Stephen Beale SEP. 7, 2018 Three bishops — one in England and two in the United States — are calling for Pope Francis to convene an extraordinary synod of bishops on the life and ministry of clergy to deal with the sex abuse crisis. The idea has drawn support from some Church analysts who spoke with the Register, but others caution that there might be better alternatives. Bishop Philip Egan of Portsmouth, England, published an Aug. 22 letter he wrote to the Holy Father calling for an extraordinary synod on the life and ministry of the clergy. Noting the sexual abuse scandals in Chile, Australia, Ireland and in England, Bishop Egan said he wanted to offer “a constructive suggestion.” “I suggest the Synod be devoted to …

Cincinnati archbishop: Vatican must ‘open the McCarrick file’ Fri Sep 7, 2018 – 12:58 pm EST By:  Dorothy Cummings McLean CINCINNATI, Ohio, September 7, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) — The archbishop of Cincinnati has called for the Vatican’s dossier on McCarrick to be opened so that Archbishop Viganò’s allegations can be verified. Appearing on Holy Spirit Radio at the end of August, Archbishop Dennis Schnurr told Annie Mitchell of the SonRise Morning Show that without looking at the documents in the case, the bishops are left with a “he said – she said situation.” “It seems to me that the only way to get to the bottom of the entire situation is to open the McCarrick file,” Schnurr said. “There’s got to be files … within Washington DC and at the Vatican on all of this correspondence.” “Archbishop Viganò mentions a few of the documents,” he continued, “but again his testimony is based …
